MIRADAS MARKET

The Canary Islands Documentary Co-production Forum
5th - 7th November 2008

MIRADAS MARKET is the international forum of documentary professionals aimed at producers/directors from Africa, Latin America and Asia who have projects under development and who are looking for funding, or alternatively already finished projects which need distribution or are looking for a showing. Likewise, there is space for projects produced in the rest of the world which deal with subjects from these regions or on North-South relations.

The Canary Islands, considered as a result of their location as a natural bridge between the continents of Europe, Africa and America, become the ideal platform for a documentary market in which producers from the south can sell their documentary work to Europe and by extension to the countries of the North.  In previous editions, Miradas Market has attempted to select purchasers who are sensitive to our documentary themes:  3 SAT, ARTE TV, AL – JAZEERA, Canal France Internacional, Canal Historia, Canal Odisea, Canal Plus, Cuatro TV, Doc & Co, Explora Films, First Hand Films, Icarus Films, ITVS Internacional, J.M.T. Films Distribution, Nuevo Mundo Televisión, RTBF, Ruth Diskin Films, SABC, Smiley Film Distribution, SVT Arts & Culture, Tele Asturias, Telesur, Televisión Canaria, TV3,  TV Cultura Brasil, TVE, TVES, YLE…

The attractive landscape of Guía de Isora, on the island of Tenerife, with a spring-like average temperature of 24ºC, the modern infrastructure and communications of the island, as well as the prestige of its hotels, make this area the perfect framework as the point of international meeting between documentary professionals.

The cost of the registration of professionals at Miradas Market is 100 euros a person for companies without a stand; for those companies that wish to attend with a stand, the cost is 250€.

The programme of Miradas Market includes:

  • One to One Pitching Meeting: a personal and modern style of pitching designed so that the projects under development may achieve funding or pre-purchase agreements.
  • Screening: 40 cabins for individual viewing devoted to purchasers of the best documentary produced or filmed in the South.
  • Lecture sessions and professional round tables.
  • Parallel activities (music, theatre…).

SCREENING

The main objective of the SCREENING is that purchasers, programmers, distributors and TV Channels should be able to see the documentaries on social topics, with the aim of purchasing the rights of exploitation of the same and reaching distribution or screening agreements.

How can I present a documentary for Screening?

The requirements for the presentation of documentaries for the SCREENING are the same as for the documentaries presented for the Official Section for Competition of the Miradas-Doc Festival and can be found in the regulations. The registration is made via the form which is located on the Festival web site.

Who can present a documentary?

Documentaries on any subject matter produced subsequently to 1st January 2007. The documentaries presented must have been made by independent professionals and producers from Africa, Asia and Latin America or producers from the rest of the world who have made documentaries in these regions of the South. Miradas Market opens up a window to documentaries on social phenomena from countries of the North.

Just like the Miradas-Doc Festival, the SCREENING includes a section devoted to the social documentary which is produced in Spain and the works of non-fiction on any subject made by documentary film-makers from the Canary Islands.

Deadlines and others indications.

The period of time for registration of documentaries at the SCREENING opens together with the official announcement of the competitions of the International Documentary Film Festival of Guía de Isora, MIRADAS-DOC.

A single producer can present for selection as many documentaries as he wishes. The participation of documentaries selected for SCREENING is free of charge.

Those documentaries which have been selected must again send, at least  2 DVD PAL for each documentary registered, so as to avoid delays in viewings. Likewise and due to the presence of purchasers from non-Spanish-speaking countries, it is recommended that those documentaries of which there is not an English language version should be subtitled into this language.

The documentaries selected will form part of the SCREENING catalogue and, therefore, will be seen exclusively by the purchasers, distributors and programmers of the television stations attending the event. The copies of these documentaries will not be returned and will form part of the video library of the Festival for use purely for consultation.  .

It is recommended that the applicants selected should send promotion materials for the different documentaries selected for the Screening (posters, press books, photos, slides, etc.).

All the costs for sending the DVDs and promotional materials to the Festival, including the customs charges if there are any, will be payable by the companies presenting the different documentaries. The packages must be entirely pre-paid. The Organising Committee will not accept any materials sent cash on delivery.

PITCHING

ONE TO ONE Pitching Meeting.

Miradas Market proposes with the One to One Pitching-Meeting a new kind of pitching, which is more personal and whose main objective is that documentary projects at the development or script-writing phase should obtain funding.

The aim of this new model of pitching is to stimulate meetings of producers and purchasing executives, facilitating the co-production of documentary film projects.  In this way, One to One Pitching-Meeting is making a commitment to direct contact between producers and Commissioning Editors of the different TV channels and distribution companies attending the event.

Divided into two stages, the first concentrates on the meeting and first contact between the producer/ director and Commissioning editor/distributor.  Producers and/or directors will briefly set out their project to the whole panel of  Commissioning Editors and distributors, and these will, in turn, summarise the profile and objectives of their TV channels, programmes or companies to the producers/directors.

At the second stage, each project will be presented and discussed individually with the Commissioning Editors or distributors, One to One, which might include the showing of a video, a suggested sound track or any other element that is considered necessary.

Co-production agreements or pre-purchase of broadcasting rights can be generated by these sessions. These sections will supply producers and/or directors with the enrichment and development of the proposal from the contributions of each of the Commissioning Editors.

How to present a project?

Registration of documentaries for Pitching is carried out through this web site by means of an electronic form. Applications should include:

  • Synopsis (Subject-matter of the  film)
  • Treatment (How is it going to be told)
  • Research plan
  • Budget for the script and development of the project (in euros)
  • Funding Plan
  • Production Plan
  • Previous films of the film-maker

Likewise, the complete project can be sent via ordinary post with those graphic or audiovisual elements which are considered appropriate for consideration.

Who can present a project?

Producers from Asia, Africa and Latin America, as well as producers from other countries whose project is going to be made in the so-called Southern Countries or deal with subjects regarding North-South relations.

Language of the project

Spanish or English.

Prizes

A number of prizes are offered for the development of the project, granted to the producers who are participating in the Pitching, as a collaboration in the development of their projects.

The prize-winning producers will sign a contract with the institution which is granting the prize under which it will be obliged to:

  • Carry out the development of the project within a maximum of twelve months from the granting of the support, and hand the project over to the  institution.
  • Notify the institution granting the support of any change which involves a substantive modification of the prize-winning project.
  • Hand over the documents in justification (invoices) for the development of the project, to the value of the support granted.
  • Mention the funding received from this institution in the final credits of the film.

Deadlines and cost of registration

The deadline for the selection of projects for PITCHING opens on 1st April and ends on 30th June 2008.

Registration is free of charge.

Once the projects have been selected (a maximum of twelve projects) to participate in the  pitching sessions, they must pay a fee of 200 €

Payment of this fee gives the right to the producers/directors to present their project at the sessions of pitching on 5th November 2008, as well as attending the Pitching Workshop on 3rd and 4th November. The objective of the workshop is that the producers/directors selected for the pitching sessions can prepare their presentation with the help of international tutors who are experts in the field.

The transport costs and expenses on Tenerife are the responsibility of the selected producers/directors. They can contact the travel department of the festival which will offer them different options for journeys and accommodation.

The organisation through the sponsors of the festival who are sensitive to the economic difficulties of the film-makers will offer travel bags to the participants in the Pitching who come from Asia, Africa or Latin America.
